Bending a run to avoid offside

With all but the youngest kids playing the sport the concept of bending the run will be used more effectively if there is understanding behind it.

Certainly, it is an essential skill for a striker if offside is being played. Even when it is not, learning the skill early is no bad thing. Principally, the move achieves the following benefits:

The striker is already moving and can therefore accelerate more effectively.

The striker knows when he or she is going to bend their run, and that gives them an advantage over a defender.

The defense is turned. Defenders prefer to defend with their backs to goal, not running towards their own danger area.

Making a tackle from behind is far more difficult than a tackle from the side, or a block tackle. Even if the ball is won, there is a risk that the defender will come through the attacker to win the ball, giving away a free kick.

A mis-timed tackle from behind can often result in a red card if it stops a striker who is away on goal. This does not usually apply in youth soccer.

Turning a defense causes it to lose its shape, creating more space for other players.

Finally, when the striker bends their run successfully and the through pass is accurate, a goal scoring opportunity is often created.
